Damien Chazelle reinvents the biopic and reimagines what flying to outer space is like in cinema in First Man and I think it’s amazing. It’s definitely an experience. It’s such a quiet film until it’s not and then it just explodes with tremendous sound design that really, really brings you into the moment of flying off into space with 60s technology. It’s frightening but it’s also inspiring.
But the drama is there. The conflict is so palpable and it reaches farther than what you would expect of a biopic. It’s not just the story and the limitless courage of Neil Armstrong but it’s a record of the human race and it’s ability to dream.

Demien Chazelle, Ryan Gosling, and Claire Foy are all going to get nominated for this. They should. If they don’t, I’m going to be really angry — unless of course I see the full line-up. It’s a strong year for movies and there are a lot of contenders, for sure.
There are a lot of good movies coming up and I hope the October release doesn’t hurt it by being forgotten when more Oscar-running movies come up later in the year. But these are extraordinary performances and this is an extraordinary vision for a film like this.
It’s gotta to be there.
