I liked the movie, surprisingly, and I enjoyed myself while watching it. But it wasn’t after I talked to my friend Paolo about why he didn’t like it as much as I did that I started to see the flaws. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy that Ocean’s 8 got made and I would watch it again, given the chance but there are flaws.
And it’s all about playing safe.
This is one of the reasons why I like watching movies with specific people. They help me see things my own biases can’t spot. My friend couldn’t quite articulate his issues with the film but as he tried to explain it to me, I was able to find the words that he was looking for and found the flaws that lay within Gary Ross’s movie.
He went and did a straight up caper film without any real emotional investment from the characters to do this other than to make money. The film needed a bad guy and it didn’t have one.
But it was a great showcase for how good Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway are and I’m so charmed by Awkwafina. I could have used more Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson.
But this movie did well on its opening weekend and I’m super happy for that. Maybe they can fix things on the sequel. Because there should be one. It’s too good to pass up.
