I had forgotten that J. A. Bayona was tapped to direct Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I had already written it off because I really didn’t like Jurassic World but I kinda knew I was going to see it anyway because I was going to be invited to the press preview.
I love how J. A. Bayona directed the film. It’s got great set pieces and action sequences and even terrifying moments. I love that he broke back the awe and the fear of the dinosaurs, which was lacking so much in Jurassic World.
But the script is so awful.

It feels like a total rehash of many of the elements of the four films that came before it. It doesn’t say anything new. It’s just bigger and louder and gimmicky and it’s music is just off with all these loud orchestral arrangements with a choir creating a sonic wall that is befitting an end of the world movie — but that’s not what this is, is it?
There are moments and sequences that I love and that’s because the director, J. A. Bayona, knows how to set up a scene to maximize its power but there’s so much that is missing here.
Unfortunately, the movie before this made 1.6 billion and so this one will make just as much and that means there is going to be a sixth.
