The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino is almost over and I haven’t even seen half of the films. I got busy with work and flying off to Bacolod for the weekend sort of cut the options of films that I could get to see. Not all the films were made available due to limited theaters and Birdshot was showing on the day I gave my workshop. When I finally had time, I had a limited selection of films and so I saw Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B.”
Read my review here: ‘Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B’ is split in half by its theme (InterAksyon).
Really, considering all the great reviews I’ve been hearing about all the films it is such a shame that the festival lasted for only a week. I would be out right now watching a film if I didn’t have tons of work and deadlines that do not move.
This festival is a whole lot better than the Metro Manila Film Festival, even last year’s festival, which had some very good films. It seems that the films I saw for this festival were the mediocre ones but even they were above standard than the usual. They were out of the box and showed so much promise and potential. I can imagine how great the really great ones are.
Philippine films are getting better and better and the audience is growing up. It’s a great time to be a filmmaker. Our biggest problem now are the theater owners who aren’t thinking about the bigger picture and just thinking about the profits.
That’s our next big enemy in the industry.
