Can We Still Be Friends? strikes the right balance between formula and realness (Interaksyon)

Caught a lovely movie yesterday. Can We Still Be Friends? was a rather surprising release from Star Cinema. I am not a big fan of the studios’ penchant for formula. I find it to be the reason why Filipino film-goers aren’t that adventurous when it comes to new forms of storytelling. For many years now, Star Cinema has filled our cinemas with feel-good movies that follow a specific formula and over the years the movie-going public has become used to it that new storytelling styles make them uncomfortable. They’ve become illiterate in the terms of the full-range of what cinema can do.

Arci Munoz and Gerard Anderson in Can We Still Be Friends?

But things are changing and Can We Still Be Friends? is a wonderful step in the right direction. It still has the Star Cinema formula but it is properly balanced out by real emotions and really good cinema, care of director Prime Cruz. Fantastic performances as well by Arci Munoz and Gerard Anderson.

  1. I think almost every dramas in cinemas bring many emotions (sad, happy, worry, taut, and they’re talking bout family, love story, friendship, etc). Everything at once. I always get all of them when I watch.
