chasing storms

it’s pretty,

the lightning, how the darkness

is ripped apart by the sudden brilliance

and then comes the rolling, growling, reverberation

in the sky and we dance in the heaviness

of all the metaphors that we attribute to the rain

and we chase storms as if we didn’t

know the rain would drown us

as if we didn’t

know the thunder would silence us

as if we didn’t

know the storm would blow our house down

tear it out and throw the contents of what we hold dear

out into the world for all to see

but we still chase storms

run after the sudden brilliance

the sudden downpour

cheer at the sound of thunder

chasing it still

we do
