Endings and Beginnings

This time of year,
New Year’s Eve,
it is like an open door.
All you have to do is to step through it.

One foot in front of the other.

It’s the rehearsed exit
and entrance
of all things.
The hourglass flips,
the current
pushes us out
from the river
to the sea,
and somewhere—
a match is lit
and candle comes to life
and there is light.
Breathe,
the air is both old and new.

The sun rises
and the sun sets
as it always has
and will be,
in our lifetime
but know that even stars
burn out and flare
because all things end
to make way for something else.

Whatever it may be.

You can never really know
how good it was
until it’s over.
