Yesterday, I walked in to my parents and my brother as they watched the final two episodes of Sense8. I had already seen the whole season (I loved it) and I didn’t get to join them as they were just finishing the last three episodes they haven’t seen yet and I had two phone calls I had to take.
I missed out on Sense8 episode 10 which I really, really wanted to see again because of a scene with a symphony that uses Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat Major, Op. 73 “Emperor:” Allegro. It’s a pivotal scene in the television show and used to spectacular effect and I had wanted to catch that particular scene again. It’s very cinematic and I was so sure my Dad would love it particularly but I had to take the calls.
I could hear it from my room, though, while I was in conversation with my friends from Manila so I knew I was missing out on that scene and that I wasn’t going to catch it again in time.
As I’m writing this, I’m currently buying and downloading that exact recording that they used in the show from iTunes. I found that it was conducted by Alfred Brendel with the London Philharmonic Orchestra & Bernard Haitink and I wanted to get a YouTube video of it to put here but couldn’t find one.
Instead, I found an Alfred Brendel with Kurt Masur doing the exact same piece. It’s the full concerto, including the other two parts (to a total of 39 minutes) but it’s really, really beautiful music.
So I’m putting it here:
Because something this beautiful should be shared.
