I mentioned in an earlier post that I’ve got big news coming this July. One them is No Filter, the play I’m working on with The Sandbox Collective as a Dramaturg, but I think it is time to reveal the other big thing that’s going to happen for me when the second half of the year starts.
Two days ago, I received by courier a copy of my contract with online publisher FlipReads, who will be publishing my first collection of poetry. Remnants: a collection and memoir is undergoing conversion process into E-Book format and will be available for purchase by July.
You can see the detail, a very small portion of the cover of my upcoming book and it is done by none other than the amazing artist Christina Dy. I sent her the manuscript late last year and I thought that she would do one of her charcoal artworks but, like a true artist, she surprised me with an embroidered artwork of one of my photos and used actual thread to do the line work and to approximate hair.
The effect is mesmerising and my good friend, photographer Cecile Golez had an interesting time, I’m sure, photographing it so it could be turned into a cover.
This collection of poems will be my first book and, I guess, it just makes sense that it would be an e-book, as I have never really been very traditional in my career path. I always thought I’d be more traditional and conventional but I’ve never really been what I was expected to be. I think I surprised a lot of people with the directions that I’ve taken with my life choices and, if not, well I certainly surprised myself and this is no exception to that.
I’m super excited to be working with Flipreads as my publisher. I met with them last month and I was overjoyed by our discussions about their objectives and the kind of care they treat all their writers. I feel like our artistic and creative inclinations are aligned and I feel that this is going to be the start of a very wonderful relationship.
I’m fired up. I want to do more of this.
Remnants: a collection and a memoir is a book of poetry that compiles over forty poems that I’ve written in the past twelve years and sequenced in such a way that sort of reflects my own journey as a person and as a poet. In the past twelve years, I was writing individual poems that were focused on an emotion or situation that I was dealing with, but when put together, and in this particular sequence, it becomes a record of who I am and where I came from and how I got here. It’s not a conventional memoir at all. But it is not just a literary construct; it really is autobiographical, when lumped together and placed in the order that I put it in, and it is both frightening and liberating at the same time.
I hope that when the e-book comes out that you would be interested enough to get a copy and give it a shot. A lot of poems here made it to the book but the poems in this blog are merely drafts and you will find them at their most refined in the e-book.
July is going to be big for me. I’m excited. I’m scared. I’m all these things and more.
