reviews for Sabel, Love and Passion and Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady

So my reviews for two musicals that I saw recently came out in Juice. I got to see Sabel, Love and Passion at the Solaire Theater last week and I saw Dalanghita Productions’ Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady at the PETA Theater last Sunday.

First of, I thoroughly enjoyed Iza Calzado’s debut theater performance essaying the lead role of narrator and the painting of the famous woman in many of National Artist BenCab’s work. Iza Calzado was tremendous and commanding and shows off her acting skills that now extend to the theater as well as the screen.

Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady is a musical by the team that brought ZsaZsa Zaturnnah to the stage based from the same comic book creator Carlo Vergara. Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady is just as fun and enjoyable as ZsaZsa Zaturnnah and while it takes on the structure of a comic book story it is still full of surprises and has an air of freshness and unpredictability that makes the musical even more wonderful experience in the theater.

The whole cast is amazing and they are having so much fun on that stage that, as an audience member, we are having a whole lot of fun as well. Th songs are catchy and funny and lovely and it is well directed and thought out. I have to give a special shout out to Kim Molina and JC Santos because they really stole the whole show. Everyone was good but when Kim Molina or JC Santos was on stage, they just blew everything up with how good they were and how much they brought in to their roles.

Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady is really a great show to see and I am so happy to have seen it that I want to watch again because there are a lot of alternates to some of the key roles and I saw Frenchie Dy as the lead role of Mely and while she was fantastic, I do want to see Bituin Escalante’s take on the character. I have been a fan of Bituin Escalante for a very long time now and I just want to see her take on this role.

And hell, I want to see the whole show again because it was just so much fun.

JC Santos and Kim Molina in probably my favourite song from Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady with Red Nuestro and Red Concepcion; this scene happens early in the play and from this point on, they just stole the whole show (photo by Erickson Navarro)
