Lament Aquatic

This great, big, blue sea

is an illusion

of freedom.

No one breathes here.

No one dances.

You can hear everything

and everything

is silent.

I’m waiting for hooks.

I’m waiting

for that sharp pain

on my lip.

I’m longing

for oxygen,

for that breath of life;

to feel the sun

by the water’s cool embrace;

to move

on my own volition

and not at the dictates

of the current.

I’m a fish

but I’ve got a heart too

and it beats

for the world above

the ocean’s surface

and a set of teeth

to tear my flesh apart

and free this longing

into the air and the sky.

I was meant to dance.

These are not fins,

they are wings

for I was meant to fly.
