Another Shot

It comes down the easy way —

into your mouth and straight into your heart —

but it doesn’t stop there.

It fuels motion

and it hardens the heart.

Another shot

and the ground can no longer

hold you steady

as your feet

turn kinetic

and your eyes

scout the room.

Another shot

and the noise and the chatter

fade into a slight hum

and it sounds a lot like,

“Do it. Go for it. Do it.”

Your hands clench into fists

and then they relax.

You find yourself

across the room

and right into his face

(and his scent floods you

and invades your bloodstream)

and with your brightest smile

the words come tumbling

out of your mouth:

“Give me another shot.

I’m drunk on you already.”
