You know where to find me… (Under the Ivy — Kate Bush cover by Shanna Nico)

Kate Bush is my absolute favourite singer and songwriter of all time. You ask me which of her songs are my favourite and my head will explode because I wouldn’t know what song to say. But I’d definitely come back to Under the Ivy, the b-side of Running Up That Hill (Deal with God) because of its emotional intensity and how personal and intimate the song feels, in comparison with many of Kate Bush’s other songs which are always lush.

Right now, I’m feeling raw and fragile and I found myself watching covers of this song on YouTube. If I could sing and I could record an album, I would definitely do my own version of this. Under the Ivy is just magnificent in everything about it.

I found this cover on YouTube by Shanna Nico and I loved how she managed to capture the intimacy of the original:

Under the Ivy (by Kate Bush)

It wouldn’t take me long
To tell you how to find it
To tell you where we’ll meet
This little girl inside me
Is retreating to her favourite place

Go into the garden
Go under the ivy
Under the leaves
Away from the party
Go right to the rose
Go right to the white rose
(For me)

I sit here in the thunder
The green on the grey
I feel it all around me
And it’s not easy for me
To give away a secret
It’s not safe

But go into the garden
Go under the ivy
Under the leaves
Away from the party
Go right to the rose
Go right to the white rose
(For me)

Go into the garden
Go under the ivy
Go under the leaves with me
Go right to the rose
Go right to the white rose
I’ll be waiting for you

It wouldn’t take me long
To tell you how to find it

***

I sit here in the thunder, the green on the grey — I feel it all around me and it’s not easy for me.

Man, those lyrics cut deep right now.

She knows. Kate Bush knows. She gets it. And every now and then, there’s a song in her catalogue that just cuts me to the core and I’m left exposed and bleeding at the very thought that it’s all there — in music and lyrics and voice.
