So I caught the first screening of X-Men: Days of Future Past today. I was expecting to hate it. I was expecting to be disappointed again. I stepped into the theatre and the moment the movie began, I felt my prejudice sneaking in… And then it hit full swing and I found myself enjoying myself. I found myself relaxing and the moment I saw Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and kicking serious ass, I was hooked.
I completely and totally enjoyed myself watching this film. Really, it was such a thrill and I kept looking for flaws or things I didn’t like and then, halfway through I said, “Fuck it. If you are enjoying it then enjoy it.”
You can find my review here: It’s About Time: A Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The only two movies of Bryan Singer that I remember liking were Apt Pupil and The Usual Suspects. He hasn’t done anything that I liked and that has excited me in years. And now he does this and I am so glad that he’s back.
And Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Ian McKellen! Wow. The things they were doing and they were just playing comic book characters. It was thrilling. I was thrilled. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised and I came out of the theatre so happy.
This is a good year for the big budget Hollywood flicks, really. Very glad that I came to see it in the theatres on the first screening. I think I might have been even more resistant to it had I seen all the raves and cheers and praises on Twitter. I wouldn’t have believed them and it would have made me more suspicious.
