The Mountain

I gathered every one of your promises

and piled them one on top of the other

until I had a mountain that reached the clouds.

Every mountaineer

from all over the world

came to climb it.

They told me of the wonders that they’ve seen —

waterfalls, plateaus with a view of the city,

and caves filled with precious stones.

I cannot enter this mountain.

Instead, I will have to take it down piece by piece

when each promise is fulfilled.

This mountain is for them

but the promises are meant only for me.
