If I may, for one moment, share an article that came out in the BusinessMirror by Tito Genova Valiente, who recently saw Sonata at the 6th edition of the CinemaRehiyon that transpired in Cagayan de Oro. Our little film was the closing film and my Dad, who had attended, came and was blown away by the reactions of the people who had come to see it. He was so happy about it and he was so happy to have been able to have been in that theatre when it screened.
The article, ‘Sonata,’ according to Gallaga, Reyes, and Cherie Gil, is a detailed review of the intricacies of our movie, but revealing much of the details that we had put into the film. Not much escaped Tito Genova Valiente’s eyes. I was quite proud, reading his thoughts on our movie. He saw the film we were hoping to share with everyone.
If I may quote a paragraph from the review:
The film is sheer magic. The film must be one of the rarest in Filipino film traditions that employs predictability, but, in the end, pleasantly surprises and shocks everyone with a piece that not only makes everyone feel good, but reminds once and for all that cinema is also about joy as it is about pain and darkness.
Unfortunately, Tito Genova Valiente does reveal some spoilers but he tries to be all-encompassing in his review. He wants to make a point and he can’t do that without talking about the whole film from beginning to end. By the time, anyway, I’m sure people know or have heard about the ending.
It just feels great to know that someone got it. Someone saw what we were trying to accomplish and what we were trying to say.
