I saw The Bling Ring just the other day and I loved it!
I love the work of Sofia Coppola. I was so bowled over by Lost in Translation and then she did it again with Marie Antoinette. My Dad and I had serious discussions about Marie Antoinette because he didn’t like it as much as I did but we both celebrated the triumph of Lost in Translation. That cannot be denied. I’m not the biggest fan of The Virgin Suicides but I will let that pass. The Bling Ring, though, is a marvellous work. Truly brilliant and provocative and definitely in-your-face.
I’m a huge fan of Emma Watson but this movie was definitely a Katie Chang’s and Israel Broussard. They owned this film completely. They had the most difficult characters to play and they did it spectacularly. Emma Watson was fabulous, to say the least, but her role wasn’t as fascinating as the ones played by Katie Chang and Israel Broussard. I love Taissa Farmiga as well but her role was even less engaging as that of Watson but the few moments that she was in, she truly shined. Everyone was so good. But really, this movie is all Katie Chang and Israel Broussard. I can’t stress that enough.
I wish I could be as daring as Sofia Coppola when I write. I’m too reverent a writer, I think. I should learn to really spread my wings and write as effortlessly and freely as I speak to my friends. I should really learn to write my stories and poems and scripts the same way I write my letters to my close friends and family. When I can learn to do that, I think, I will really soar as a writer.
I just don’t know what’s stopping me.
