Get Some Sleep

Star drops in the mouth,

a little rain shine in the eye,

the moon on your toes,

and a soothing balm made from honey

rubbed all over your lower back;

these delicate little details

that differentiate the steady ground

from the off-beaten track

that you skip and hop over

are the things that delight me about you.

Get some sleep, you tell me,

pressing your palm on my face,

covering my vision

and the sight of your lovely countenance.

You gently push me to lay on my back

and as my body makes contact

with the soft mattress of the bed,

my face burns with the electricity of your touch.

Star drops in the mouth,

a little rain shine in the eye, I repeat again and again,

and even with your palm on my face

I know you are smiling.

I can feel it in the marrow of my bones.

Get some sleep, you insist,

but I dare not

for fear of losing this moment forever

in a vast sea of memories

and a dream that bears no resemblance

to the whimsical nature

of our personal language.

Get some sleep?

No.

I want to stay awake forever

in this moment

and cast aside all other moments

and every possible dream.

Sleep is only for the lonely.

Wakefulness is the lover’s domain.
